Melanesian Geo magazine was developed to draw attention to the rich and distinct biodiversity of Melanesia - Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji - which every year is increasingly threatened by a number of natural and human-made factors.
Unsustainable development, commercialization and exploitation of wildlife, and resource exploitation such as mining and logging are some of the main threats to the unique plants and animals of these countries.
In many cases local communities are unaware of the significant and extensive negative impacts of these activities on their local environment and way of life. As much of the land in Melanesia is owned by local communities, it is important that they understand the impacts of their choices on their communities, environment and future generations.
This magazine aims to tell stories and share information in a way that is accessible and understandable to local communities, schools and the general public across Melanesia.
